Galaxy Express 999 The Movie (1979)

Old skool anime at it’s best. Galaxy Express 999 is a fondly remembered anime series in Japan which ran during the 70’s and is still very popular today. It was never broadcast in the UK at all. This movie tries to compress the epic 113 episode saga into 2 hours and instead of visiting 100 or so planets it only visits 4. There’s also some slight modification to the anime series storyline.

A 10 year old boy called Tetsuro wants a mechanised body so that he can live forever. His dream is to go to the Andromeda galaxy where mechanised bodies are given for free. However during his trip to the city of Megalopolis, his mother is brutally murdered by Count Mecha’s men. With revenge on his mind, Tetsuro is given a chance to travel to the Andromeda galaxy by receiving a ticket to ride the space train Galaxy Express 999 by a mysterious women called Maetel who looks exactly the same as his mother. Her only condition is that she can be his travelling companion.

During his travels, Tetsuro has plenty of adventures on the planets that they stop at and makes some new friends. But will Tetsuro find Count Mecha and avenge his mother?

Leiji Matsumoto’s awesome Galaxy Express 999 is one of the best animes ever. Brilliant storyline, engaging characters, wonderful music – everything really you could ask for in an epic anime and more – it’s all here. If this movie made you wanting more then you could check out the anime series or the other OVA specials that have come out over the years. Galaxy Express 999 appeals to everybody of all ages and it’s as popular now as it was back during the 70’s. This is one anime movie you should not miss. Highly recommended.
